Female soldiers score a first

Herald Reporter

TEN female soldiers have scored a first after graduating in crew commanders, cascavel driving and gunnery, armoured tanks driving and
maintenance and tank gunnery courses in Chakari, near Kadoma.

The 10 female soldiers were part of over 50 soldiers trained in the six courses during the past year.

Zimbabwe National Army, Chief of Staff administration and quartermaster Major General Engelbert Rugeje said the army has developed a
culture of treating soldiers as equals regardless of their sex as long as they measured up to the tasks at hand.

"The Zimbabwe National Army does not only encourage female participation to uphold the ethical policy of maintaining gender balance in
the force, but has since developed a culture of treating soldiers as equals regardless of their sex as long as they measure up to the task at
hand. It should be clear that there is no short cut in training."

He said training was the cornerstone of success in the battlefield as it created the basis for mutual understanding among combatants and
bred confidence and determination to succeed even under adverse conditions.

The ZNA School of Armour ran the six courses concurrently for the first time for 13 months from May 2005 through June 2006.
