AT LEAST 181 soldiers yesterday graduated after undergoing two months training at the Presidential Guard 2 Battalion in Dzivaresekwa,
Harare.

Speaking at the graduation ceremony, Colonel Shailet Moyo, who is responsible for careers and administration at Zimbabwe National
Army headquarters, said the main thrust of the general squad drill course was to teach junior and non-commissioned officers the basic
aspects of drilling an army squad using the correct words of command.

"In attaining this, they were taught foot and arms drill and these were blended with a package of military civic education in line with the ZNA’
s current training doctrine," she said.

She said a well-trained and disciplined soldier should know his or her national heritage.

Col Moyo urged soldiers to remain vigilant and guard jealously the gains of the liberation struggle that brought the county’s independence.
"You should also remain disciplined and exemplary to men and women under your command," she said.

She said the two-month training which the soldiers underwent, was characterised by sleepless nights, barrack room inspections,
personal turnout and general cleanliness.

"The course which commenced on July 3 2006 with a capacity of 187 students is ending today (yesterday) with only 181 students
remaining. This figure includes 18 ZWS (Zimbabwe Women Soldiers) who withstood the physical and mental demands of the course,"
said Col Moyo.

She said it was saddening to note that all the soldiers who were returned to their units from the course were removed as result of
indiscipline except for one whose spouse died.

"The course was designed to mould the participants into well disciplined non-commissioned officers at their various levels hence the
course motto was "We negotiate corners and not orders," she said.
